MG MGB Technical - Carbon canister hose routing
Hello. Restoring a '72 bgt. Carbon canister has three hose connections at the top and one at the bottom Top two outside hoses are fuel tank (vapor separator) and carbies while the center top hose goes to the rocker cover. The hose at the bottom of the canister comes out at a right angle. Where does this hose go? Gracias, Tom |

Tom. It connects to a rubber hose which goes forwards towards, then just through, the radiator support, at least on the later model cars. It is simply an air vent line and none of my illustrations show where it terminates on your model. But, I suspect it is simply an oil resistant hose which goes forwards, just as the later model ones did. Les |

It goes down the passenger legwell firewall (along the steel fuel lines) - and simply ends down by the trans tunnel. The end is open (no fitting) and does not connect to anything as it is an air intake. One of the reasons why it is positioned down there is to make sure that if any of the carb floats stick open the fuel will overflow out the bottom of the car and not all over inside the engine bay. |

Les and Daniel, muchas gracias for the info! Routing the hose down the firewall as Daniel suggests may be the more convenient method. BTW Les, some folks from our club will be at the Tucson meet at the end of Feb -- hope to see you there. Thanks again, Tom |

Tom. De Nada. When is the meet in Tucson and who is sponsoring it? The Highland Games are in Phoenix, near the end of February, and they have a small Brit car show there. But, I was not aware of any event in Tucson. More information? Thanks, Les |

Being an outlet for overflowing fuel is a secondary function. It's primary purpose is 2-fold - one is as an outlet to allow expansion of tank and float chamber gases via the charcoal canister when filling the tank and when parked, which traps fumes as it does so, and the other is as an inlet for a continuous flow of air to purge the charcoal filter of said fumes before going on to ventilate the crankcase when the engine is running. Whether it is routed forwards or down, it is just open to atmosphere. *Because* it may vent fuel at some time it would be best to ensure it would take it down below the engine. |

Paul, thanks for the explanation. Les, I'll send the info via email. Tom |
