MG MGB Technical - Carburettor heat shield
Other than a scrap unit, does anyone know of a source, or a replacement, for the fire resistant material clipped to the carburettor heat shield. |

Richard, check your local hardware store, ask for heat shield for soldering pipes. |

Richard, over here they sell a heat shield material that is some sort of ceramic sandwiched between two metal plates. It is easy to cut and shape and I have a feeling it was developed for turbo heat shielding. This web site describes it. It is an Australian site but I would think that the UK would have the same stuff on the market. http://www.aclperformance.com.au/prod_heatshield.htm I used it to replace the old stuff on my heat shield. DK. One of the reasons I love this site. I used the soldering padding that Rich mentioned. It works fine, but the kit that you listed is very nice and even has the rivets. Always appreciated when someone makes a kit like this. |

Bruce, you said it! I'm in no immediate need for this stuff but I just bookmarked both of these sites because I'll want to do this sometime. This BBS is such a great source of information. DK and Tony: Thanks! Allen |

Thanks gents. Just what I needed! |

Richard - One caution - if any of the original insulating material is still on the shield, be very circumspect about removing it as it contains asbestos and if a tremendous health hazard. Do not do anything to it that will cause it to produce dust that can be inhaled as it can cause mesotheliomia, something you definitely do not want. If you must do anything with it, put it in a bucket of water and and do what is necessary to remove it while it is submerged, so that no dust is generated, then put the residue in a plastic bag and seal it before disposing of it (preferably at a hazardous waste site). Cheers - Dave |

Tony, You are right. The ACL heat shield was developed for the Ford XR6 Turbo and it also turns up in a few other applications as well. Cheers , Pete. |

I used Hardy Plank, a cement based house siding product that I added to the existing heat sheild. It seems to work great. |
