MG MGB Technical - Chassis rail repair section
I am restoring an MGBGT at a rather glacial pace and have now discovered heavy rot in the chassis rail where the gearbox bolts on. Mine is unpleasantly rotten right up to where the firewall joins the floor. The straight bit of chassis rail is available as a repair section, saving the cost of the whole thing to the front of the car. (This is the chassis rail which goes from the bumper mount at the front all the way to the gearbox crossmember.) Can anyone please tell me how far the replacement panel goes? Does it have the curve for the point where it meets the firewall? Does it include the captive plate for the gearbox mounting? Thanks, Mike |

Mike, I don't know the answer, but can't the supplier tell you, or maybe they have some pictures? I had the same problem with my old GT, but I got lucky and someone gave me a parts car with good rails that I could cut out and apply to mine as needed. Charley |

You could maybe look here: http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=7644 And see if you can tell from that. I am not sure what part you actually need! I understand the glacial pace restoration. I am coming up on five years on mine :) Simon |

It was a sort of fishing trip post, hoping for an experienced answer. I will ring the parts supplier and ask, it's just people here actually buy the parts and put them on themselves, rather than just sell them. To them it's just a bit of bent metal, painted black and about two and a half feet long (my guess, sat at the computer). It's actually the back bit of part 15, HZA4966 which goes under your legs. Moss don't seem to have a picture of the repair panel. A parts car would be great for various repair panels but I don't think it would bring peace in our time at home. Thanks! Mike |

Mike, i have a GT for parts. It has rotten rear wings and failed MOT due to this, but i only need the mechanical parts and the inside trim. The car is garaged in 24533 Neßmersiel and you can cut the things you need out of it. If interested give me a call 0172 2110915 or 02162 42648. Cheers Ralph |

Mike, Yes, that whole thing is pretty expensive if you only need the back half. If Ralph is anywhere near you, that sounds like the way to go. That part, on the other side, and the crossbeam is exactly what I had to replace on mine. I cut them out of an old car with a SawsAll (reciprocating saw with the blade coming out the tip of the saw) and it didn't take much time at all to get them out. Now I wish I had cut out the rail where the rear of the rear springs mount to the chassis while I had the chance. I hadn't looked carefully enough at the time and didn't know I needed them. So, learn by my mistake. If you are going cut stuff out of Ralph’s car, do a good job of inspecting yours before you go. Charley |

Hi, Ralph, many thanks for your offer, unfortunately I have had a look at the map and Neßmersiel is on the other side of Germany completely! I'll give you a ring anyway. Mike |

Hi Mike, we have rooms for guest in our house there. As we live most of the time close to Duesseldorf, we should talk about the aprx. time you would like to come along, so that i can manage to be in Neßmersiel too. You are invited to stay for a weekend or several days if more time is needed. Cheers Ralph |
