MG MGB Technical - Choke Cable
1972 MGB The choke cable has become frayed between the carb and where it goes into the plastic coated metal sleeve. So now when i pull it out it is a real pain to get in. I just found out that a new cable from Moss costs over $60 ! Any help/ideas. I was thinking of taking the cable out of the metal sleeve and soldering the frayed strands together. Is it hard to get at it behind the dash ? Happy new year all |

Gerry Are you sure about the cost of a new cable? Here in the U.K. Moss only charge 6 or 7 GB pounds. As an alternative you could remove the inner from the Knob/slider and fit a new inner cable only. Soldering the damaged end would probably lead to a fracture where the solder has made the end too rigid Jim |

I cannot find the right page on their web site, but in my winter catalog the choke lists at $26.60 for the T handle choke. Clifton |

Gerry, Since you are in MA, maybe you should check with Bob at Brit-Tek. They are in NH. Charley |

Gerry, If you find that you need to cut the inner cable back (sometimes they can be a bit too long), then figure out how long it needs to be, and solder the cable together near where you will cut it, and then you can cut it and keep it together. When I have done this, I turn the tip on a grinder after cutting into a point and all has gone smoothly. I use radiator solder as it is a bit stronger than the usual stuff and use a non-corrosive flux paste. You can usually find the flux at a big box home improvement store or hardware, and the radiator solder at a place like NAPA. |
