MG MGB Technical - coolant temp sensor
Just wondering the collective view in re. replacing the coolant temp sensor....Mines original...'74...and is working just fine...but as part of my perpetual tinlering....I was wondering...Leave well enough alone or get a new one?.......I'm sure the insert is cruded over from the antifreeze environment....and I could just pull out and clean.......and stick with the old original....But?.....Thx to all... |

Ah for gods sake leave it alone! You're opening an enormous can of worms there. Its that perpetual tinkering that causes half the problems youll get with classic cars. I know from experience cause Im a bit of an auto-hypochondriac. |

Some people have experienced problems with new replacement senders. I would not replace until it fails. Clifton |

So far so good with mine. If you keep antifreeze current it will still be clean when you remove it. Evan small film of crud will not hurt, just slow down the response time a bit.So I vote leave it be! |

Go on, you know you want to! It's not like you're going to snap the thing off in its threads, or crush the fragile little capillary tube that runs to it, or use so much muscle that it comes free like a gun going off whilst a hairline crack spreads from one end of the head to the other. No, it'll be fine... unless maybe you drop a spanner and short the alternator with a great bang and a flash or .... |

Steve, the US spec cars have an electric temp gauge, guess they didn't trust us with the capillary tubes. |

Thx all...and with the resounding consensus...I'll leave it alone....although I'm running out of things to tinker along.......I knew this day was coming.... |

I bought my MG to drive, of course that was back in the days when gasoline was cheaper than replacement parts. I only replace parts that are worn beyond use or broken. It has kept me from getting a bad case of "the might as wells". I have 144 thousand miles on mine and currently use it as my daily driver. Pete, it sounds like you are ready to aquire another one. |

PETE. I think it's time for another TINKER TOY. Leave the good one be. Remember this sequence USE-ENJOY-BUT PRESERVE Do not change the sequence under penalty of LAW. SANDY |
