MG MGB Technical - Correct wire wheel colour
Hi, I am currently having a set of wire wheels refurbished for my 1966 MGB GT. Can anyone advise of a paint code, preferably a RAL number, in order to achieve the correct colour? I believe that the original BMC paint code was AL.1, but this means nothing to any wheel refurbishers or paint suppliers that I have been in touch with to date. Any help would be GRATEFULLY received! Cheers, Rich. |

Rich Had the same problem a while ago and came to a dead end re the paint formula. Ended up buying a can of VHT High temp wheel paint - colour is Ford Argent Silver SP188. I believe this is a close match to original Cheers John |

Many years ago, we matched the colour of NOS Dunlops, under the rim band, where they had not been exposed to light at all. It is a dead "white" silver, and we used R&M silver base for metallic paint. However, this starts to get darker on exposure to light, just as the originals did, becoming progressively more grey. In effect, anything in the silver - grey range is correct if you pick the right time period. FRM |

Previous post is very interesting. When I put some new Dunlops on my car they came in a very flat light grey aluminium finish. They looked horrible against a BRG car so i sprayed them with some silver hammerite. Your car and you can do what you like to make them work with the cars finish. I will put some other w/w equipped car pics on as well.

I purchased a used 1970 MGB in 1971 with 10K miles on it. It was completely original and nearly new. It was many years until I needed to repaint the wheels, but to get as close as I could to the original color, I used a spray that had the word "aluminum" in it, "brushed aluminum" or something like that. Anything with the word "silver" was a mismatch. Although it might not look bad, spray paints attempting to duplicate the reflective nature of a silver paint are not consistent with the original color of the wire wheels. That was long ago and likely no paint code to offer. |

Thank you to everyone who has posted on this... Interesting post about the non exposure to light. I figured that the colour might be a bit of a lottery, so you've all helped to confirm this! I have been put into contact with a wheel manufacturer and refurbisher today, they have more than enough colour swatches so hopefully I'll be sorted soon. Thanks again. Rich. |

Rich, I just painted wheels for our '70 and used PPG Concept (a single stage) DCC Low Gloss "8568 Prime" (a GM color in America) called Argent Silver, Pewter. Pictures are on my website, http://www.dbraun99.com under the title "MGB Wire Wheel Conversion that turned into a restoration." The wire wheel section is in the suspension section. warmly, dave |

Dave, Thanks for your post. Your website is great! Cheers, Rich |

Clausager describes it as 'Aluminium'. |

Thanks Paul, I checked Clausager and got the paint code AL.1. I have also seen this elsewhere, but it means nothing to anyone anymore! Having been recommended to Lap Tab in Birmingham I checked their website which did inspire confidence. I have just got off the phone from them and they seem like the guys to trust. Strangely enough they are less expensive than all the other places I have tried, none of which have inspired any confidence! Thanks for all your help, guys. I will report back when I have the finished articles. Cheers, Rich. |

How about AL1 = aluminum 1? Aluminum with no colour. Which is exactly what the silver base I mentioned was. FRM |
