MG MGB Technical - Crankshaft pulley lock washer

I'm replacing the front cover oil seal and gasket and I ordered a new lockwasher from Moss. It appears to be a much heavier metal than what came off the crankshaft pulley originally. Do I understand that the washer has to be "bent over" like the old one to hold the nut in position? The old one bent rather easily but this looks as though it will be a bear to bend once everything is back together. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this easily. Looks like it is going to be more of a challange than getting the nut and crankshaft pulley off the car to begin with.

Hey JCH, I used Moss' washer and a few drops of lock-tite. Thier version of the washer is too heavy to bend. Tom

I would guess the washer needs to be bent as the pulley rotates clockwise and the nut comes loose counter clockwise. Am I wrong or is it not necessary to bend the lockwasher over up against the nut?

The pulley cannot rotate on the shaft due to the keyway, so it cannot cause the nut to come undone. I did manage to get mine bent over (and punched the other side into the recess) but it was a fight.

You hear a lot of people say that the bolt does not need to be locked as they are usually so tight to remove. "BUT" now and then one does come loose and sometimes with disastrous results. Denis

I might still be able to use to old lockwasher but it need a bit of straightening to be useful again. I am really suprised at how thick these new lockwasher are.

I saw a modern toothed drive wheel lying in the road recently, and a friend said the crank pulley came loose on his Volvo, fortunately he didn't loose that. Personally I would always use one. It always surprises me that the brake caliper bolts have them, but not the steering arm bolts.
