MG MGB Technical - crankshaft wooduff keys off, how?
Hello all, I have an issue to extract both crankshaft woodruff keys. Crank has been reground but cahin wheel no longer slips over them. Could you please tell/show me what kind of device is necessary to achieve properly this operation? Thanks in advance. |

Happened to extract them off but is it normal they were that hard to pull off? Rgds |

Renou Yes they should be a tight tap in fit in the crank. If they are going to be replaced they can easily be removed by grabbing them with a pair of sidecutters parallel to the crank and lifting the end of them out. Willy |

Renou. Tap the rearwards portion down towards the surface level of the nose of the crankshaft, elevating the front portion of the key. Then, use a hammer and a screwdriver (or other form of drift punch) to force the front further upwards. Eventually, only the back portion will be still in the semi-circular slot in the crankshaft nose and you can use the pliers to remove it as William notes. "Crank has been reground but cahin wheel no longer slips over them." This sounds like the woodruff keys were removed when the crankshaft was reground and not fully seated in their recesses in the crankshaft. I am not sure what the "cahin wheel" is, but it sounds like the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley. If so, measure the depth of the slot that the woodruff keys go into and the height of the keys above the level surface of the crankshaft. If the keys are too high (standing proud) tap them firmly into the recesses and check again. Les |

Les, I think it was a typo. I believe Renou meant chain wheel. In other words, the sprocket. Charley |

Thanks everybody for your help. I realy meant "chain wheel" or sprockets. I confirm they need a light hammer knocking to fit in the crank, and Les's method worked fine. Regards. |
