MG MGB Technical - crinkle paint
The mat black crinkle paint on my 73 GT has started to peel around the speedo. I am not a perfectionist so i dont want to take the dash out but i would like to touch up the bits with something that looks as good as possible. Any suggestions ? |

Hi, Wrinkle rather, the wrinkle process is create by the heat. If you have heat source, why not. Regards |

I sucessfully sprayed my dash last year. though it wasn't pleasant. remove all the old paint with a paint stripper, I used nitromors, be careful of the fumes. Then choose a very hot day, let the car get nice and hot inside 27c or more, I ran run the engine with the heater working to get the temperature up.I warmed the bare metal dash with a hairdryer, and sprayed two coats of Hycote wrinkle finish ( about £9 from Moss ) ten minutes between coats. |

You can touch up wrinkle paint but it tends to clump thicker to the old paint. A hair dryer or heat gun (do not get too close) will assist in getting it to wrinke. Depending on how much you need to touch up, you can get an ok appearance. If you do decide to take the dash out, strip the dash with paint remover (I have been using the orange oil commercial paint remover with good success and it is a lot safer, not flammable and not harmful to your lungs.) Once you get all the paint off, visit a powder coater and have it coated with a wrinke powder. It is the last time you will do it and you will not believe how nice it looks. Mine cost #60 to have the dash powder coated (that was in Wausau Wisconsin). It is very hard and very close to original. |

I agree with BEC. If you want a permanent job get it powder wrinkled. I stripped mine and used a spray can. Looked good but was pretty fragile. It did not matter too much to me as I covered the dash with Walnut Trim so I only have the edges visible. Dave |

Has anyone tried brushing on wrinkle paint? I remember it saying on the directions that medium thick is good. Might be worth a try on a patch job like this. Very wierd stuff to work with tho. Kinda cool to see how it wrinkles with heat. If it's cold, it won't wrinkle at all. If you mess it up, it probably won't be worse than it is now. Then if you can't stand it, take it all apart and do it right. |

I did a stunning job on my "flakey" Dash, in situ! Took out the switches and instuments, removed the wheel, removed the trim and lock from the glove box lid, and masked up everything else. Rub down with fine abrasive to remove loose stuff, rust etc. Now the secret, Two fan heaters!! Set them up on boxes on the seats to get even heat across the dash and follow the instructions on the can, leave the heaters running all through the process. You can do the glove box seperately but you get a more even effect with it in place. |
