MG MGB Technical - Dash

My dash has seen better days. I have covered the cracks (several years ago) with one of those dash covers and now it is starting to crack on the face.
Is there any way to PROPERLY repair the dash or do I just have to buy a new one?

Thanks
Bruce

I see that you used a dash cap and now the original face is going also. I have used a replacement face complete from Moss. To install the dash it has to be removed and completely stripped of all gadjets. Then remove the old cover and clean the base metel panel. It is a tedious job but well worth it when finished.
Some upholster shops have a jelly that they squeegee onto that broken area and then cure it with a heat gun.followed by vinyl painting. It can be done if care is taken.

I am not sure if the US dashboard was designed for safety reasons or to satisfy N.American taste. UK views would provoke some criticism so I will simply say that you have an opportunity to convert.

Many UK cars have a laminate wood dash superimposed which imitates the upper end saloons of the 60s and 70s - they have moved on to carbon fibre which looks quite businesslike in a V8. The advantage of Carbon fibre is that it coats the original dash - including round the sides - it is also more durable.

Let me know if interested, I will send you link and some pics

It was designed to meet U.S. crash safety standards, not N.American tastes. RAY

Opportunity to convert to what? Right hand drive?

Thanks for the replies and the options. The dash is off right now to do other work.
First of all I will see if I can get it repaired in my small town. If not, then I am interested in a carbon fiber dash so if it is left hand drive, please send links and pictures please.
Failing the other 2 options then I will order a new dash.

Bruce this is the link you need. Write to Ian - he will ask you about your car LHD or RHD and the finish you want.

He will need an OE dash - assuming your car is N. American LHD, there are LHD dashes ((BHH475/907) about over here. If yours is an original RHD GTV8 come back to me - I can help.

Ian will have pics but again come back if you want to see an RHD in Carbon.

Wood and carbon fibre are *overlays* to the original tin dash, not replacements.

Yep, our tastes went to the nice soft padded dash. Just like we insisted on the 6 inch rubber over riders on the bumper. And that of course that had us demanding the rubber bumper and the raised road height.

It would be interesting to see the statistics of injuries from MG crashes from the US and the rest of the world with the MG's that had the safety devices and those that did not.

Don't get me wrong. I don't move the car without my seatbelt on and I installed headrests on my 67 after having a very bad neck injury from being rearended in a 68 MGB.
