MG MGB Technical - Dash top vinyl/ door finisher position

Am I correct in thinking the dash top vinyl should go under the windscreen seal? I thought about 1cm would be about right.
Secondly, does anyone have a picture of the position for the front door finishers. A quick look seems to put the riveted part on top of the wing section which sits under the door panel when closed.
Richard Coombs

For the first part 'yes'.

For the second you've lost me, there could be several parts that could fall into this category. Picture?

Thanks for the first part. The finisher is the chrome part that covers the top end of the door seal and fits to the end of the dash. I just couldn't remember where the riveted end went, and was surprised that it appeared to extend onto a part of the wing which I thought would too visible. I've just found a photo in Clausager which explains all.
Richard Coombs

OK, it was the 'rivetted' bit that was confusing, they should be screwed.
PaulH Solihull

Really? The parts list calls for one rivet and one screw on the front ones and two screws on the rear. I was going to use a stainless steel rivet to keep it 'smart'.
Richard Coombs

I used all screws to keep it smart! My copy of the Parts Catalogue only lists rivets for the GT, screws for the roadster. However the quantity isn't given as they are shown as NLA.

However I only used one on the fronts, possibly because the other hole was obscured by everything else round it having being fitted first. Can't remember after 20 years and it's not handy to check, nor has it been a problem.

Dear Richard and Paul, I think you are both quite right. In My GT I have opted for nice stainless steel self tap screws. looks neater than rivets and allows quick dismantle if necessary. On another post, this is where I stripped back all the old vinyl off the door caps to discover quite nice wood underneath. I do not know what wood it is, but it had an attractive grain, so I simply stained it with walnut stain, and a few coats of poly-urathane clear varnish. Finish back with very fine steel wool, oooo grade, then a coat of thick furniture beeswax polish and a final buff. Looks Fab, as they, and I said in the 60's oops age! regards Mike

I was disappointed that the screws now sourced by Moss are flat topped zinc and are just like the wood screws of the same size at much cheaper rates. I've now got some chomed screws from Namrick which also have the half-domed top. They are 1/2" instead of the original 3/8" but will look just great. I shall also use them for the tonneau studs. I shall rivet and screw the front finishers as I don't see any possibility of me wanting to remove them. What will be nearly 5 years of restoration is enough for me!
