MG MGB Technical - dashboard switch for electrical washer pump

Hi was there ever a 'factory' dashboard-mounted switch for an electrical washer fluid pump or are they all after-market?

Can anybody recommend a switch which fits the (1969 metal) dashboard and looks right? While there are hundreds of offers for MG electrical washer fluid pumps to be found nobody seems to offer a switch to operate it.

All MGB electric washer pumps had the switch on a column stalk for convenience. For a dash switch you would really need a non-locking push-button, I'd be looking at fitting one to the back of the old manual pump button if I was thinking of changing and so keep the same visual appearance.

Hi Paul
unfortunately I don't have a manual pump I could modify and at 15 £ they are too expensive to buy one just to transform it into an electrical switch.

There is already a (Bosch) switch on my dashboard which fits all right, just it's all black plastic, see picture. I hoped somebody could point me in the direction of a nice switch.

Personally I think that is very neat and unobtrusive. If you wanted a chrome bezel/nut a number of places do momentary push-buttons with them, but if you want a matching toggle then just use a heater or wiper switch. You may even be able to modify it internally to make it non-latching.

Hi Thomas

Visit a local electronics parts shop and check out their range of switches. I found a nice one with chrome surround that only needed a slight opening of the dash hole to fit.

Take a regular spring loaded switch and fit a black handle from an old Lucas switch. You might have to file down the toggle a bit and drill a hole in the new handle. A little epoxy and hand labor with black paint wil fix you up.

Michael do you have the '24DB' switch with chrome bezel '29F' installed?

From the principle of operation I just found what I need (see picture). Unfortunately there seems to be no Lucas-style pushbutton switch of this dimension, just much larger ones to operate starter motors.

Picture: Sprung off-on. For windscreen washers on cars etc. Requires hole 14.5 mm diameter. Rated at 5 amps on 12 volt systems

Thomas- No! I still use the old push valve as it still works! But I recalled seeing this and noticed it had a 12.5mm hole which looks about right. They also do a toggle switch 68701 off/mom (presume momentary) for 13mm hole but with metal toggle or SW9 off/on with plastic toggle.

I had a pair of the old push button manual pumps. I gutted one and fitted a momentary switch from a local auto parts store. I held the switch in place by rolling up a small length of thin sheet metal, inserting it into the old pump until it rested against the new switch. At this point, I drilled a small hole in the side of the pump and inserted a small self tapping screw to hold it all together. It looks completly stock and runs the electric pump perfectly. RAY
