MG MGB Technical - Door hinge won't come out the body.

Hi,

While stripping my BGT I noticed that the screws holding the doors were really damaged as for the same on the screw holding the hinges to body.

A lot of fiddling with heat and impact wrench I successfully got them all out, front fenders are of so access to the front hinge nut was good and easy to remove.

The hinges on the right hand side came out easy peasy, but on the left hand of the car i just can't get them out of the body, like the hinge is to large for the access hole. The inner bolt on the hinge is welded together with the hinge so I might try and cut it off and hope that i'll come out then.. or widening the access hole?

I really want to get the hinges out since there's a lot of surface rust behind them that I want to attend since I'll be re paint the car.

Am i missing something or has anyone experienced similar problems?

Alex

Four screws and the nut should be all that is needed, especially as the other side has come out! The hinges are supposed to be able to move up and down and side to side for door adjustment, so ordinarily it shouldn't be the hole too small.

Is there an A-post repair that has welded it to the hinge?

Try putting the nut back on so all the threads are engaged but the end of the stud is not exposed, and hitting it with a large hammer.

I've located the problem.

The innermost par of the hinge that has the bumpstop is bent inward and therefor the hinge is stuck.
Here i'm pointing on one one of the non damage hinges from the other side, just to clarify what i mean.

I think i'll have to cut them out, since I can't get access to pry them back in to shape.

Here you can see just how far in it is compared to what it should be

Looks like the door has swung out so hard that it has pushed the face carrying the rubber buffer behind the edge of the hole in the post. Even the one that came out seems to have signs of that. I was struggling to see why it can't be bashed out, until I realised the face of the hinge that holds the rivet and remains of the buffer, has been pushed right back behind the flange of the A-post, having been ripped away from the rest of it - that's some force!

Could you weld something onto it to enable you to bend it back?

Not easy, I know.

Two horizontal cuts top and bottom of the hinge aperture out to the edge of the A pillar, bend the "flap" out to withdraw the hinge and then bend back and weld up.

Well, if anyone is interested i drilled a hole from the outside in the a-post and punched it back with a tackle tool to remove the hinge, worked a charm.

Thanks for the update.

Sounds like a good result.
