MG MGB Technical - Driveshaft

Hi all,

Is it possible to remove/replace the driveshaft with the engine and differential in place?

Looks like it will be a tight squeeze.

Cheers, Neil.
Neil Peniston

Neil. Not at all. Quite easy removal because the forwards end the the prop shaft telescopes. No problem. doing this.

Hi Neil, as Les says very easy. Just make sure to align both ends when puting back. And for your sake I hope the special bolts at the gearbox end are ok. Otherwise a real pain because otherwise one has to remove the flange on the gearbox to replace the bolts! I know as I have just had to do it...

Gentlemen, can you enlighten me as to 'those special' bolts at the gearbox end, if they are OK.? What is so special about them, thread size, high tensile, torque? I remember taking all this apart on my old TR6 when I had the overdrive serviced, they came apart easily enough, and I used them again. Is the Mg set-up any different? Mike

Mike. There is not sufficient room on the flange for normal hex headed bolts on the transmission end. Hence, they use a circular headed bolt, with part of the circle cut off, that allow the bolts to fit and the flat holds them in place as the nuts are tightened. You can examine them next time you are under the car and see what I am writing about.

Ahh, Thanks Les, I never paid attention to that bit. Fortunately all appears well in that dept, look forward to that drama sometime in the future. Hoever this week I have learnt a lot. A good mix for loosening nuts and bolts ( ATF and acetone.)the prop shaft bolts and how to hold them. Excellent web site isn't it! Mike

And you cannot put these new special bolts (if you need too, of course - two of mine were sheered off) in again without taking the gearbox flange off first!
(by the way Les, I am waiting for the power valve in the post on the weber carb - that's why no new update on that thread)
