MG MGB Technical - Early Gearbox shifter thread size and pitch?
Anybody know the thread size and pitch for the shifter knob for the early (BENT) shifter 62-67 3 syncro.? Thanks |

The one on the shifter of my 68 is 3/8" UNC and the ones on the RB cars are 7/16" UNF. So, there is a fairly good chance that yours is similar to the 68. Do you have any measuring devices--a set of dial calipers will give the major thread diameter and counting the number of turns in a 1/4" to 1/2" distance will give you the thread pitch. If not, go to a good hardware store and try turning on various sized nuts to see which one works. Les |

I don't know the answer, but am pretty sure it is different to the 68 one! The 68 had the 4 syncro box (as i am sure you know). I had a 70 car and when I removed the gearknob from that it did not fit my 67 car (3 syn OD). I bought a gearknob that self threads with a plastic insert. Not brilliant, but cheap! It doesn't really tighten up properly. Iain 67 BGT |

It's a standard thread probably 3/8" NC. I bought a jamb nut at a hardware store for my 65. I went with the OEM stylel rubber mounted phenolic knob as I could never get the aftermarket walnut one (with metal insert) to stop the buzzing. I used the nut and washer to preload the rubber bushing in mine to keep it from moving. I have had many happy miles with that fix. I'd try a jamb nut and washer under your knob and see if that keeps it from spinning and buzzing. |

The threads on the shifter in our MGB (66 w/3 syncro box) is 5/16 - 24, I just checked it. Cheers - Dave |

Robert, I have the same problem with the buzzing knob. It is amazing how loud it gets! Rich |
