Does it have a date code behind the filter? It seems very hit and miss as to whether they do or not, if it does then that will date it to the year, see here http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/enginetext.htm#blockdate
Failing that it's early, based on the colour an 18Gx 1971 or earlier. No cooler by the look of it, hanging filter. If it is the type with the replaceable element then probably an 18G, GA or GB used in a a Mk1 up to November 67. Coil on the engine so probably a dynamo originally i.e. a Mk1. However all that can be changed, one thing that can't is whether it is a 3-bearing or a 5-bearing 18GB from October 64. If it has a rev counter drive then it's 18G 1962 to 64. 3 bearing used GWP115, 5 bearing used 12H2267 replaced by and compatible with GWP114. All long-nose, same bolts but different gaskets - GWP115 used 12H814 and the others 88G430, and they are different. |

Talk to Sports Car Garage in Perth, they will be able to help. What is cast on the other side of block? Should have 1800. Could be engine from Austin 1800 (land crab). More photos would help, what car is it in, etc. https://www.sportscargarage.com.au/ Mike |

"need to Id this MGB engine" Don't all MGB blocks have 1800 cast in? In fact all 1800 B-series? |

Thank you all for your input, does have 1800 on the block also looks like AE3 but hard to make out, could be just AE. can't see any other numbers. While your here can I put a spin on filter attachment on to this engine. Thanks appreciate it Regards George |

All the ones I have seen are AFn not AE, but I don't think you can put much store by that as far as date goes. AFAIK the later spin-on adapters can be fitted to the earlier blocks, but quite possibly not with a dynamo. |

Thanks for that info |

Thanks everyone for your help, I now realise how difficult it is to date these engines, somehow I thought it may be an easy thing to do, anyway I have now obtained an engine number through a friend of the original owner he obtained this way back when ordering parts that Engine number is 18GBUH15081. Still would like to know the year of this engine and any other info. Thanks a lot George |

18GB was used from October 64 to November 67, numbers 101 to 91175. 15081 is about 17% the way through that range. Did you look for that date code? If there it will tell you the year the block was cast. |

Does it have a cable tacho drive at the back on the LH side? Looks MGA to me.But the capacity will be cast into the block. 1622? Colin |

"Thank you all for your input, does have 1800 on the block ..." "I have now obtained an engine number ..." |

So I suppose finding the correct water pump should not be a problem now |

George- Using page 140 of Clausager's Original MGB as a research source, I'd say that your engine number suggests a production date somewhere during May or June of 1965. |
