MG MGB Technical - Engine mounts
HELLO. Just fitted engine back in my 71gt. Come to put alternator belt(fan belt) back on and it will not go round the front crank pulley. It will not go under the pulley because it fouls the crossmember, any ideas please. Cheers Malc. |

Were there any shims under the engine mounts when you removed the engine? If so, leaving them out would reduce the clearance of the harmonic balancer to the crossmember. Ray |

Do you mean the steering rack rather than the crossmember? Neil |

Don;t know about shims Ray engine was out when I got the car. Neil it's the crossmember it fouls on .Thank's for the quick reply's cheers Malc.. |

Malc, Okay, I'll have a look in the garage after tea...! Neil |

New motor mounts? Those shims arent very thick. Clifton |

Malc, There's enough room for a couple of fingers between the pulley and the cross member on my 1970GT. Sorry to ask an obvious question, but there's a rubber block that goes between the engine mount bolted to the block and the one welded to the body. Is that all present and correct? I wouldn't think you could get the bolts to line up if it were, but I cannot see how my engine could drop enough to close up the two-finger-thick gap such that you couldn't get a fan belt in there. I asked about the steering rack because, on mine, that's where the tight spot is. Probably because I have a mix-and-match timing chain system and pulley though. Come to think of it, maybe my pulley is smaller then... I do remember that the MGB fan belt doesn't fit. Neil |

Neil, Yes the rubber block's seem ok. It's got me baffold looking at Clifton's idea of shims next? |

Malc, the rubber blocks are handed as are the screwed on monts. Though the mounts fit either way round, if they are interchanged, the engine will be positioned too far ahead. Just compare it to an other B to be sure that it is right. Hope this helps Ralph |

Malc, Ralph, The mounts are handed, but I don't think you can put them on the wrong way round as the bolts will not line up. And that wouldn't affect the gap between the pulley and the crossmember anyway. And presumably the engine wouldn't fit to the gearbox or the gearbox mounts wouldn't line up. I'm thinking oversize pulley? Neil |

check the size of your pulley as it may be for a rubber bumper car that is bigger than a chrome bumper one due to the extra height of the crossmember on rubber cars is the belt that your fitting a 950mm one as that will tell you its a rubber car engine or pulley setup yours needs to be 5 1/8 inch diameter and if its 6 inch theres your problem ste |

Ste Yes that's my problem 6inch pulley got sorted with a 5 1/8 it's now ok cheers lads for all the help ... Malc |
