MG MGB Technical - Engine re-build
Have acquired an 18v engine to re-build (play with!!). No cracks as far as I can see, the usual wear, BUT the remnants of a follower in the sump and some really worn followers (ends and diameters)! One is quite tapered. Hard to tell if there's a problem with the tappet guides. Question; is there a remedy if the guides are bad, e.g., reaming and over size tappets. ![]() |

Peter Burgess would be the man to ask. I've never seen followers like that before! |

Alan, get new tappets and see how they fit. If NG you could get the bores bored and sleeved. I can't see the bores being any better than the tappets in your picture! |

Yep, I don't see how the bores could have got away without recprocal wear.............engine must have been bloody noisey, what with the broken rings and shot big ends. They probably turned the radio up! Sleeving sounds like an option if over size tappets don't exist. |

Hi Allan I reckon Art is right saying buy some new tappets and try them for wobble, failing that have them bored to MGC size and use MGC followers. I reckon it would be cheaper to get another block though, especially as all the galleries must be full of debris! Peter |

Had a closer look today, one or two of the tappet bores, while not big enough o accomodate a rugby ball side on, are the same shape!!! The block, thankfully, owes me nothing, so no great loss. The head looks good so will flow and convert that and stick it on the current block, which has few miles and good oil pressure. How much bigger are C tappets? As for debris, haven't found the jig saw pieces to make a full tappet yet!! |

Hi Alan Sorry for delay measuring tappets. MGB tappets are approx 0.811", a 13/16" bore would give 1.5 thou clearance. An MGC tappet is approx 0.9375", a 15/16" bore would give 1.5 thou clearance. Peter |
