MG MGB Technical - Engine stalls when cold
All right I took the weber DGV off and put the Zenith-Stromberg back on. The engine now runs fine. In the mean time the battery needed to be replaced. It seems to crank faster with th new battery than it did with the old battery before it died. With the Weber the engine rpms used to drop and then stall for the first couple of stops and once warmed up it used to run fine. I'd really like to run with the Weber but it's very annoying to have to restart it at the first few stop signs (yes the engine starts right up after it stalls). George |

It sounds like the choke tension needs to be adjusted a bit tighter on the Weber. This will keep the engine on choke and thus higher idle speed a bit longer until the engine is fully warmed up. RAY |

Thanks Ray. I have an electric choke. Will rotating the housing counter clockwise cause the fast idle to stay on longer? |

Yes. RAY |

I meant counterclockwise. |

Not having looked at one for a while, I can't be certain which direction will richen the mixture on start up. It you loosen the locking tabs, you'll quickly find out which direction the choke housing needs to be rotated to make your choke stay on a bit longer. Do this adjustment when the engine is cold or your setting will be inaccurate. RAY |

Took the car out (with the Z-S). Smelled gasoline and rpms low at idle. Cut-out valve leaking badly and the plunger was up. Bypassed the valve and the engine starts and runs much better. Plan to switch back to the Weber with the choke rotated counterclockwise as soon as we make it through the current serries of snow storms. George |
