MG MGB Technical - evans classisc cool-heater valve mishap

thought i would share this little issue.
this week i purchased a new radiator and some evans classic cool waterless coolant, drained system, fitted radiator and used the prep fluid to clean the system whilst engine was running as per instructions,so far so good. Drained the prep fluid out the next day and put in the classic cool only to discover the heater valve leaking when i closed it.So new valve purchased and another small bottle of fluid to replace the fluid that i lost although salvaging some into a container i still had to pay another £29.99 for a two litre bottle,an expensive mishap. I can only assume that the prep fluid cleaned the crud from the heater valve whilst the valve was open,so when i shut the valve it had no seal hence the leak.Let this be a lesson to all, cheers, andy

I don't understand why a standard MGB (if that's what it is) needs something as expensive as Evans waterless anyway.
Paul Hunt

Evans talk a very convincing argument UNTIL the mention of costs. It's not only the cleaner solution and the coolant, but the cost of a leak, a hose failure or need to reclaim every last drop when just changing the hoses or thermostat. Then you need to buy extra for top-ups. No thanks.

Andy,
thanks for info

the Evans stuff has some supporters here but many who are not including a respected engine builder

if you want a heater valve that doesn't leak then I'd strongly suggest buying from Ashley Hinton

its been a few days now running around with the replenished water system and the engine really is cooler,i did have a very hot engine before i done all this work. I have just completed a journey to preston and back and i can report a cooler engine with the fan kicking in a lot less than before. One thing i did notice though, the heater is not as hot,but ill take that over baking anyway. One thing is for sure my car now seems very happy to run me around. Total joy....

"i did have a very hot engine before i done all this work."

Something else very wrong there especially at this time of year, that the different coolant is perhaps only covering up. Or maybe would have been corrected anyway with everything else that you did plus standard coolant. Why did you fit a new rad?
Paul Hunt

If you read the label it tells you it will run up to 12 degrees hotter with waterless coolant.

having cleaned the cooling system and replaced the rad with new I'd expect that the cooling system would help to keep the engine cooler regardless of the coolant you use

as said the heater now being cooler suggest there was possibly a problem before unless the heating valve, pipes, matrix or its seals have now been disturbed or any are not working properly or are now partially blocked

you could check that the heater valve is actually fully opening as they tend to be either not fully closing or not fully opening depending on the cable connection - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yICLtvR4ai8
