Doug,

It depends what you want to invest. Cheapest route is to use old cat's flanges to have a custom replacement pipe with standard exhaust or with big bore SS sold by Moss.

First be certain that you can get it by NY emissions. I doubt it very much, as I think NY now uses California emissions rules, unless there is an exemption for classic plates cars. If you can do that without a cat, convert to earlier manifolds, pipes, and carbs.

There was a non cat pipe to fit the manifolds you have, meant for 75 only cars, but I think it has long been NLA. Any exhaust shop should be able to make one easily, but if it is not legal there are very severe consequences for licensed repair shops messing with the exhaust/cat.

FR,there are no emission rules for a 33 yr old car here in ny. they dont even put the probe in, they just check signals lights and horn and such. So im not worried about any of that. thanks DOUG

question to all is , will a 74 or 75 mgb exhaust system fit the 79 b? if so and as stated dont want or need the cat conv ,then it seems the way to go. Anyone use the ansa exhaust systems? Back in the late 60,s i had an abarth but see they are no longer available ,too bad they were great. thanks doug

OK. Emissions inspections rules and practices are all over the place, depending on local/state regs.
It is in fact a violation of federal law to change anything in the system, but since we are still fighting the Civil War, up to states to enforce. PA is tough in designated areas, but here (not designated) we only have a "visual check" which is supposed to verify things. If the car had a cat, it still needs one, but not necessarily exactly as OEM. For obsolete cars with no dealers remaining, you can get documentation from "knowledgeable parties" that it is impossible to restore the emissions/exhaust to OE specs, especially (but not exclusively) for cars with classic plates, but then you can only use the car as a partime/showtime/weekend toy.

74 and earlier system fit except for the front pipe, but they will foul the rear axle unless the car is lowered. And the rear hanger is different. 75 on systems compensate for this. Only the 75 had the no cat front pipe.

Ansa systems are good, have used many.
Only problem they are not stainless, so they go away in time.

Doug,

Concernig Cat, in modern cars they are a plus to keep exhaust gaz " clean" but in a car with a primitive carburetter they are more magical thinking than efficient. In those days when emissions control were at the beginning , starting in '68 there was that air injector pump and few more items that were efficient for the first 3 months to comply with regulation. It is more important to keep a MGB well tuned than those gizmos.

Ansa systems are excellent but slightly noisy after few hours of driving. If you want SS frew-flow you could buy Stebro system but rare and very expensive.
