MG MGB Technical - Exhaust heat wrap

I have a 76 US spec MGB with the stock intake and exhaust manifolds. As the exhaust manifold is really close to radiator hoses and the intake manifold/carb, I am looking at ways to supplement the heat shielding. There are a lot of types of heat wraps out there (Summit Racing seems to be a good source). I was wondering if anyone has considered or used any of this material on a later B or has any insight. Thanks. Brian

That's a great way to end up with a warped manifold.

You shouldn't have a problem with heat, even in Fornicalia.

Since you have a one-piece intake/exhaust manifold, wrapping the exhaust manifold section would only promote heat transfer into the intake manifold, thus reducing the density of the incoming fuel/air charge and thus reducing power output. You'd be much better off replacing the whole system with one from a pre-1975 model, if the regulations of the Glorious People's Republic of California will permit it.

All the comments are correct. Wrapping in some circles amy well be a 'racing idea' to keep under hood temperatures lower, and direct all the heat down the exhaust system. Unfortunately, in practice it led to warped manifolds, rusty manifolds ( as moisture is trapped.) greater heat transferance to the block, thus combustion temps went up. Better than wrapping go for ceramic jet coating of the outside AND inside of the Exhaust manifold. For that matter the intake can be as well. this insulates all, and all heat is directed away. Mike

Thanks Paul and JM for the intelligent commentary
