MG MGB Technical - factory V8 exhaust clearance

Anyone have any thoughts on removing the front silencer (I think it's called the balance box)and just keeping the rear box.

The reason being since slightly lowering the suspension and more recently fitting new but lower aspect tyres the centre box is a real problem for grounding. The pipe and box are limited for height by the body cross stiffener in the middle of the underside.

would the v8 be excessively noisy

Alan,

We have a V8 conversion roadster and I can tell you that we initially went without a resonator/center muffler(silencer) back to twin glasspacks and it was painfully noisy. We did eventually purchase and install a resonator, tucking it into the area under the US-driver-side seat. But ours is a rubber-bumper car, so we had more clearance (although we're planning to lower the car, eventually).

Not sure this answer is truly applicable, but it does come from a V8 owner who has had both exhaust setups.

Came back to add - we have the BOP/R 215 engine...

My V8 CB Rstr conversion only has one muffler. It is a rather large one & only just fits along side the fuel tank. It doesn't appear to be loud to me , but being a bit deaf, nothing does. It's passed an annual Rego. test (NSW MOT)for the last 12 years. It probably all depends on the type/brand of muffler that's fitted. Barrie E

Not that I have a V8, but in Peter Burgess's book, on the 1800 B the removal of the centre box was good got a bit more BHP, and ground clearance. But I suspect that is with the standard silencers. I found with mine it was too raspy, I suspect someone before me changed the rear. Anyway now I have a longer deeper rear silencer and it is really quite pleasant at most revs. We are still told the Peco, with the manifold and rear box that they do is still the optimum. Mike
