MG MGB Technical - Flywheel/crankshaft pegs
Has anyone attempted to remove these? How? My new crank needs a couple. I have ordered a couple as they are cheap enough - assume you freeze them and then drive in with a BFH? Mike |

Mike. I removed mine with a set of vise-grip pliers (mole-grips?), as recommended by some friends who were professional MG mechanics. I installed them by simply driving them in with no need to freeze them before hand. Les |

Mike, Press or squeeze, leave the BFH in the tool box. a) You need the pegs to line up perfectly so they don't jam up. b) Hammering them can "upset" them, i.e., increase their x section and/or burr them and cause problems when mating up the fly wheel. Freeze them if you like, also warm the crank with a hot air gun. I'm a great proponent of interference fits being made with the minimum of force. A workshop vice should do the job. |

Mike- I have to agree with Allen. Simply pounding them in with a hammer is asking for trouble. Coat the pins with WD-40 so moisture won't freeze on them, put them in a Zip-Lok bag, and chill them in the freezer. Heat the crankshaft flange with a hot air gun, then take the pegs out of the freezer and press them in. |

I have never had a problem with piening of the head of the pin when I have simply driven them in. But, the concept of freezing the pins and heating the end of the crankshaft (if that is possible?) seems to be a more elegant solution to the problem. Les |

The issue I have is the crank is in, sump on, back plate and seal installed then I realized the pegs were missing so I cannot really press them in! I am not sure how effective heating the crank end with a hot air gun is as the crank is a massive heat sink. I reckon it will be freezing pegs and careful hammering. I am heartened by Les comment that he actually removed pegs using vice-grips in the past - gives a guide to the fit. Mike |

Just an update - put the pins in the freezer (-24 deg C)for a couple of hours, tapped them in with a soft faced hammer, they come with decent lead-in chamfer - no hassles. Mike |

Or use dry ice -80 C |
