MG MGB Technical - Fouling plug lead

Just been tinkering and moving the electrics around under the bonnet as PBO had sort of rotated coil, fuses and starter solenoid to odd places! I then untangled the plus leads. Whilst doing this I noticed that No4 plug lead is catching on the steering 'coupling and has worn about 1/2 way through the outer sleeve. It is not shorting (Yet!) and all runs fine. I just wondered if this was 'normal' and down to the timing/position of the dizzy or if the steering coupling has been assembled incorrectly. I suspect the first as I cannot see how the second could be true.
Hopefully the picture shows what I mean.

yep, it is all a bit close, you just have to arrange the leads to give the clearance necessary.

Mine can do the same with the cap with straight leads, although it is the cover that has worn rather than the lead itself. As long as the remaining thickness is more than the plug gap you should be OK ... Ideally it should have the angled cap but short of that a sleeve of hose over the lead will help, I've done that on another lead that rests on the oil filter.

I thought so. I think sleeving is the way ahead then. As I can just see the inner core I think it is time to act.

Get a set of leads with 90º boots on the distributor end (or even just one replacement lead with the 90º boot)....

How are your motor mounts?

Mounts are fine. The damaged area actually fits the nut on the column so that is defiantly the rub as the steering is turned.

Right, but my thought was that if the mounts were soft & compressed, the engine would be sitting lower in the chassis and perhaps reducing the clearance between the distributor & steering.
