MG MGB Technical - Front Hubs

Has anyone replaced their hub bearings under the part no's GHB 102 and 105 recently? If so can you remember the manufacturers name e.g. Timken, SKF etc?
Cheers
John.

They are Unipart part numbers, but they appear to be what every supplier uses to identify the bearings, no matter where they are sourced.

I have a kit from Automotive Bearings Ltd and it contains FAG bearings, made in Germany.

Why do you ask?

Hi Dave

I see Automotive Bearings Ltd /BRT have a branch about 7 miles from me in Hove Sussex and they stock most brands.

The reason for the question is because I'm doing some work on my Twin Cam, that has the same bearings as the B, over the winter and noticed Moss have what they call 'aftermarket' bearings with a 'Z' after the p/no and half the price of the one without the 'Z' So Why the difference in price, Quality?

You mentioned kit. Is that a kit of bearing and seals for one side? If so what is that p/no?

Cheers
John.

J Hughes

Yes, bearings and seal for one side. The part no. is ABK016

Anything that uses the OEM part number with a suffix letter is usually a copy. Usually (but not always) they are cheaper, which leads me to suspect the quality, although it could just be that they don't have the overheads of the original manufacturer or their successors. For that reason I usually avoid them.
Paul Hunt

Yes I agree Paul. From past experience I now do as much research as possible before buying parts especially anything to do with the critical bits.
J Hughes

I mistrusted a "kit" (inner outer and oil seal) that was the same price as a single bearing; so I bought the kit and the individual bits......the markings were the same!

Hello Michael
Do you remember the make of the bearings/kit and who you bought them from?
Cheers

Brown & Gammons Baldock Marked LMI or LM1 and then some numbers. One of the ones I used from B&G did have Timken on it IIRC. I happen to have an MGOC kit -Powertune made in Taiwan on the box. (Think "stores" have overdone it for bearings....)

Many thanks Michael
