MG MGB Technical - Gas strurs for the GT rear hatch

Has anyone recent experience of fitting these, kits were once available from MGOC, but some years ago.
Thanks for any help,

On this side of the pond they are carried by Little British Car Company (www.lbcarco.com), but I have not seen a set installed.

Contact me offlist at mowog1@aol.com . I can provide pictures and ordering information.

I have them available through my small business, "Pieces of Eight!" and will ship to the UK.

I also have bonnet and bootlid strut kits.

I fitted them to my '78 GT Paul, they were available via eBay. At first I fitted them as Rick has fitted his, using plates screwed to the hatch directly. In this configuration I found the struts pushed down on the hatch making the hatch locking mechanism tight. So I swapped them around and fitted them with the fixed bracket on the lower rain channel. This worked better but pushed the hatch up and so it was catching the rear of the roof as it closed. It took a bit of adjusting but it's better now. I ideally I need struts the same length as those fitted but with less pressure, I haven't been able to find any as yet.

The full gas strut saga can be found here:

Paul -

I have a set of Rick Ingram's struts on my 74 GT. The latch is secure when closed without excessive pressure and when released the hatch moves to the open position very easily and is stable when in the open position.

No connection with Rick - just a satisfied customer.

Jan, I don't suppose you know what the length of the struts are when extended, or the pressure they're set at?

In the past I've repaired struts with an aftermarket kit that consisted a plastic two clamp one peice unit that clamped tightly the body of the strut and loosely to the piston rod allowing it to slide up and stay whereever you put it. these little black plastic units worked well, were cheap, and were easy to install, now the bad news I can no longer find them but maybe someone else can. Why not just replace the strut?

I've installed Rick Ingrams struts & recommend them. Barrie E

Me too. Rick has told me I put mine on upside-down, but they still work fine. One of these days, I'll turn 'em right-side-up.

Allen...It just helps to keep the seals lubricated since the hatch/struts are kept in the closed position most of the time.

Thankyou for your advice and comments on these struts, I have ordered one of Rick Ingram's kits.
Thanks again,

Paul.....your strut kit went into the hands of the USPS today for delivery via International First Class Mail....post mistress advised 5 to 10 business days....Thank you for your order!

I have a similar kit (mine came from Clarke Spares, who I believe supplies Moss with theirs) and love them. I have done both my GT hatch and bonnet with the dual-strut kits.

Yes, Robert Clarke of Clarke Spares does indeed provide the struts to Moss....I use a different strut manufacturer for the kits offered through "Pieces of Eight!"
