MG MGB Technical - gasket sealers

When do you you use gasket sealers such as silicone, and liquid sealers and when do you trust just the gasket? I know from my youth that inpsection parts such as valve covers only get sealed on one side but what is the general consensus? Thanks-k

I hate silicone. Where people have used a bead as thick as shown on the packaging it oozes out all over the place and if internal can block small passageways. If you use a thin smear then unless the part is very small it dries very quickly and doesn't seal anyway.

I use Hermetite Red which is non-setting, and just a smear both sides of the gasket. For rocker covers the usual method is to glue the gasket into the cover, then use a non-setting sealant or even just grease on the other face.

I have become a convert to Wellseal as recommended by Peter Burgess no less. I tend to use it on most gaskets except head and manifold gaskets. Use them dry.

Like Mike, I use gasket sealer on most gaskets, except I use Permatex - Aviation, available in most auto parts stores in the US. Works great, especially on the rear axle gaskets.

I have become a Permatex "The Right Stuff", convert....It is not a silicone, but becomes rubber when dry...Can be used to repair rubber seals,(even on external rubber parts), and to be used by itself, as a gasket maker, or to be use with gaskets...
Comes in an aerosol can, and is easy to control....
Costs more than others, but worth the price (IMHO).
