MG MGB Technical - Gear lever position.

I am in the middle of fitting a LT77 box to my B. I have roughly fitted it to find the gear lever position is about 1" to the right in relation to the gearlever hole on the tunnel.
I quickly measured the position of the gear lever hole from the sills and it is not central to the car.

To save me some time could someone tell me if the engine mounts are central. If so I assume the old 4 syncro box had an offset gearlevel position, and I will need to modify the hole or the gear stick.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Mine sat over to the left! I actually did a little maths and figured out by how much I needed to move the gear box mounts over to put it in the correct place. It was a very small amount. Yes, I know that puts the the drive shaft slightly out of line, but the amount is so small it doesn't matter.

I also found that the gear stick was too far back as well. I got over that by cutting the lever off and welding it onto the front of the thick part at the base. This has the advantage of shortening the lever too. In the picture you can see it held with a strap before welding. There would be nothing to stop you doing the same laterally.

Two cable ties securing the gear lever to the gearbox doesn't look very substantial ... ;o)

Thanks Mike

I was woried about the prop shaft being out of line too. I believe that 3 deg of offset is acceptable.

Is the B box gear lever position offset?

Your idea with the gear lever is a good one. That and a small bend could be all I need.

Dave, on the RV8 the gear lever actually has a dog-leg joint in it to make it come in the right place. Paul, you know, I wondered why the gear change was so sloppy.....

FWIW I've been to Stoneleigh to today and noticed that original gearboxes have the lever about 1" to the left of the centre-line of the gearbox. 3 degrees angle shouldn't be a problem, there has to be an angle in the vertical plane of both UJs anyway of about that for correct lubrication.

Thanks Paul.
I will leave the box where it is and fabricate a off-set gear lever.
