MG MGB Technical - Gearbox Mounting rubbers
Hi, Yet another question. Can anyone give me a tip regarding the best method they've come across, when replacing the round rubbers on the gearbox mounting support. I've tried detergent, & placing in a vice, still not going in! Yet another worst job on an mgb?? Thanks in advance. (Perhaps we can have a league table of the worst jobs. My worst, replacing the oil relief valve with the engine in place.) |

The support, that you refer to, is to prevent the engine from coming into contact with the radiator in the event of a collision. I deleted mine over 25 years ago since a damaged radiator, after a collision, would be the least of my worries. RAY |

Hi, Thanks Ray, Apologies, my fault for not being clear enough. I mean the gearbox support that attaches below the gearbox i.e. above the crossmember. Ta |

If you are talking about the central gearbox crossmember rubbers that sit vertically between the crossmember and the gearbox then they have nothing to do with the restraint of the engine back and forward but stop the gearbox moving upwards over bumps. To fit them you just need a bit of cord wrapped round the groove in the rubber and passed through the hole in the mounting plates ( taken off the car!) Small end of the rubber goes into the rounded side of the hole - then just pull the cord and the rubber will slip through - just like how they fit windscreen rubbers. |

Hi, Thanks Chris, Exactly what I needed, I'll give it a go this afternoon. I never mentioned an engine restraint. Iwan |
