MG MGB Technical - Gearbox Oil

I have seen the lengthy discussion on MGB gearbox oil. I have used 20-50 engine oil from the Halford's classic oil range. Is this OK or is there a better UK brand? Appreciate views.

Rod, I have also read the recent posts on gearbox oil and noted the debate (and the inane comments of the trolls!). I have used Halfords classic 20-50 oil (which I'm told is the old Duckhams oil) in my car for the last 5 years with no problems with the gearbox or overdrive. My take on it is that if engine oil was originally recommended by the manufacturer, then that's good enough for me.

Castrol 20W50. The gearbox is soooo smooth. OD clicks in and out very smooth as well. The guys at Abingdon knew their stuff.

Grateful for that; I like to use the best I can so I'm happy.

Halfords is made by Comma. Whether they made Duckhams or not I don't know. I doubt you would notice any difference between any of the 20W/50s, and probably not with the other grades recommended by the factory for our climate such as 10W/50 or 10W/40.

I've been using Heavy Duty non-detergent 30W oil for the past several years after having replaced a tempermental solenoid. It seems to work very well with the OD engaging and disengaging instantly. For use with an OD, I would highly recommend it. It doesn't foam since it has no detergents. The people, who purchased the rights to the OD, were once asked what oil to use. Their answer; just about any oil will work. RAY
