MG MGB Technical - Gearbox oil level

I have the 'dipstick' type gearbox with OD and finally managed to extract the dipstick from the hole! (Just a bit tight after a decoke and clean it now slides in and out nicely) to discover that the oil level was below the end of the stick. I added a pint of oil (via pipe on funnel) which raised the level so it shows just below the min mark. Question is how much oil takes it from 'Min' to 'Max'? I don't want to overfill and as it is quite awkward to get at I don't really want to fill by trial and error.

Bernie, someone will be along to correct me on this, but until then...
The difference bewtween MIN and MAX is commonly one UK pint (on and engine anyway!). Although I'm not 100% sure this is the same for a gearbox it would seem sensible to keep them the same.
I would put half this amount in and check before adding the second half.

Tie a loop of thick cord through the metal loop of the dipstick and it makes it much easier to pull out.

I'm surprised the OD worked that low, they are quite sensitive to level.

I have a nice big loop attached already (PO) but it was stuck tight. I actually had to lever it up with a large screwdriver through the loop and a block of wood on the tunnel as a fulcrum to shift it. Once out the top seemed to be coated with black gunk which extended down to the top o ring seal so essentially it was glued in! OD has not been a problem really a bit slow to engage maybe (About 3-4 secs in 4th) but I assumed that was normal.

Just for the record, the 3 synchro/OD transmission holds 5 1/3 Imperial pints. The 4 synchro/OD transmission holds 6 Imperial pints. RAY

My dipstick( when I discovered its location!) Was also rather tight. A PO had placed a loop as Paul suggests and it did make withdrawing it simpler. I cleaned the plug very thoroughly Even sand blasted it, (cleaned it well after)Then put new 'o' rings and a little silicone grease, the stuff you can obtain for food treatment machines ie food grade. It forms now a good seal but always easy to remove. Mike

Black gunk glueing it in could be decomposed O-ring, that happens to the instrument bezels.

3-4 secs is a bit long IME, there are selective shims on the relief valve that control speed vs sharpness.

I can live with 3secs. I'll see what happens once I top it up a bit more. I think the gunk is the glue that PBO glued the carpet with!
