MG MGB Technical - Gearbox shims
When removing the gearbox 1st motion shaft cover plate, to renew the oil seal, the circular shim around the end of the bearing had worn away so only fragments of it were left. How do I determine what thickness of shim I replace it with, as these come in different thicknesses and it said to replace as required. Thanks Trev |

The manual I have does not mention them. |

Both the Leyland and Haynes manuals cover it -"Measure A the depth of the bearing register (recess) in the front cover and add .012 to represent the compressed gasket. Measure B how much the first motion shaft bearing protrudes from the casing. Fit shims to make B .000 to .001 greater than A." .002 (6K778) and .004 (6K779) shims are mentioned, several of the usual suspects seem to stock them, although the larger one is .005 which makes more sense in getting .000 to .001 than .002 and .004 shims do. |

Go to Chris's website and download his 'MGB 4 synchro overdrive gearbox servicing guide". Excellent shorthand list of what to do and how to do it. The Haynes manual says much the same. |
