MG MGB Technical - Hazzard Light Headache!!!
Well, I have been trying to get hazzard warning lights to work on my 70 BGT. Switch seems to work ok red light flasheds, but only rt (passenger side directional signal light flashed. I attach the wires from the switch/flasher unit as per wiring diagram and unable to get left directional signal to work. Any suggestions?? Thanx |

Kermit. All the problems I have had with hazards when the flashers work OK with the normal stalk switch has been with the hazard switch its-self. If you have another switch to try do that first. Dave |

Kermit, As Dave already indicated, and good to hear from cars fitted with a different type of switch on the other side of the pond, its usually the hazard swtich itself. Does your left turn signal indicator work because I believe you will find that the wiring for the turn signals go through the hazard switch FIRST. Although not a proper(?) repair, I have found that simple rocking the hazard switch back and forth a couple times usually cures the turn signal or hazard indicator problem(providing the switch is in good shape). If you are up for it, take the switch out of the dash, take it apart and clean the internal contacts. HTH Fred |

Are the signal lights working normally? If signal lights are OK you could switch the green/white wire on the hazard switch with the green/red wire. If the switch is the problem the left will flash with the wires crossed. If you elect to try cleaning the switch use Paul Hunt's suggestion to do the disassembly in a plastic bag. There are some parts in the switch that have wings. Wish I would have been smart enough to think of that years ago when I used to do some camera repair. I spent half my time looking for springs and other small parts, wore out my knees looking. Clifton |

Make yourself an enlarged copy of the wiring diagram. Using the wiring diagram and a test light, check the output of the switch. Check the sleeve connectors where the green/red and green/white wires from the hazard switch connect to the turn signal circuit. |

If the turn signals work OK then it is either the switch as has been mentioned or a break in the green/red between the hazard switch and the 6-way bullet connector (it is shown as a 6-way on my diagram but only 4-ways are used, so it may just be a 4-way) which is probably in the mass by the fusebox. The switch itself makes three separate connections - between the light-green/brown from the flasher unit, and the green/white and green/red to the corners of the car, which is why one side can work and not the other if one of them isn't closing. the other 'side' of the switch is a single make/break contact which is used to disconnect the turn signals when the hazards are in use, so make sure you have the hazard wiring and the turn signal wiring on the correct sides, check the switch with an ohmmeter for just two connections joined together and the other three all isolated when the switch is operated one way, and three conenctions joined together and the other two isolated when operated the other. |

Thanks, for your responses and suggestions, yes both directonal signals work. I will give them a try and let you all know progress after the Holidays. |
