MG MGB Technical - Head Gasket

Hi All,

A question that I've found has an equal number of answers on both sides of the issue.
With a head gasket which has copper on one side only, is the copper face placed against the block or the head.
I'll be interested to read the consensus here.

If there is a right and wrong it is usually stamped on.

With the disposition of the holes is it even possible to get on the wrong way up? Isn't the rocker oil hole only at one end?

It's usually inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets where that question is asked ... or is it manifold to downpipe sealing rings ...

In my experience, they have normally been copper side up.

Also, they are normally stamped 'TOP' on one side.

We tend to find the crimped side of the fire ring is upwards to the head side.

I did have a look at an old one to find that the holes *are* symmetrical i.e. there is an oil hole both ends, but the edge of the gasket is slightly different at the front to the back.

And in case 'TOP' isn't enough, it is also stamped 'FRONT'.
