MG MGB Technical - Help: Sparkplugs for a 2.1 Litre?

Hi guys,

I'm getting to the point where my 2.1L conversion is ready to be fired up.

Can anyone recommend any spark plugs that are better than the standard, eg. are theere any multi-spark plugs that fit a B that people would recommend?

The engine is a 2.1 litre, fast road cam, high lift rockers, so not a real "racey" engine, but one with a bit of grunt, and a bigger/better spark might help.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Grant :-)

Don´t start with the end of the chain. Start at the beginning: use an electronic ignition for the much higher voltage, then use goold ignition cables and then fit whatever spark plug you want!

With an electronic ignition you get at least twice the voltage at the plugs.
I had this checked on my MGC with a big BOSCH-tester:
with points I had about 10KV at idle and 5 KV at 3000 rpm.
We then fitted a Piranha pointless system and without any other modification got 25 KV at idle and more than 10 KV at 3000.

In my MGB with a 2-litre engine I use BOSCH W8DC or Champion N9Y since years with no problems at all in combination with a Lumenition optronic and a standard BOSCH-coil

Hi,
To my 1950 engine , I always used NGK BP6ES spark plugs. I fitted also a Luménition Optronic in an Aldon distributor, Lucas Sport coil.

Same as Michel here on my 1950cc engine.

On my +.040" engine with alloy head and flat top pistons and mod cam ngk 6 work great. Basic electronic ignition with hotter coil. There are basic limitations on how wide the gap can be with a hot coil. If I run a plug gap over .100" I have spark jumping from the rotor to the distributor shaft which shuts the engine down real quick. The Mallory distributor has much better hi voltage capacity plus the ability to custom adjust the advance curve.

Hi guys,

I'm fitting an electronic ignition, uprated coil, distributor and Magnacor leads.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll pop off down the road and get some plugs now.

Many thanks again,

Grant :-)

In my b's I use either Champion N9Y or A.C. R45 (NGK's and Bosch) will due in a pinch..In acordance with OEM my 78 B was shipped to the U.S.with N9Y champions and has never had anythig else,
and for ignition the new( flame thrower) elctronic distributor. Is decent for the money about $130.00 caught it on sale at Vicky Brit.

with the 123, I have a 40k coil and gapped the N9YC to 42 thou. 30 MPG last tank. Vic
