MG MGB Technical - HIF4 Carbs

If anyone has a HIF4 on the bench (or the gasket from carb to manifold) please could you measure the hole centres and hole diameters for mounting the carb to the manifold. If you could also measure the position of the hole centres from the edge of the carb mounting flange that would be perfect! thanks Michael

Mchael i have removed the carbs from my 78 rubber bumper gt.Watford classics based in Hertfordshire should be able to help. I live in Ware let me know if you need any more help .I am not very good at measureing.

As a matter of curiosity, what are you doing that you need this info, but evidently have neither the carb, nor manifold, nor even a gasket to work from?

FRM-
I am fabricating a bracket-to be mounted on the top bolt(s) of the carb to supercharger- for a throttle position sensor for EDIS! Currently only a cardbord template! However when I took measurements from Denis' carb, it would seem that the HIF fitted to later model Bs and the HIF mounted on my s/c have different mounting flanges. I have taken measurements from my set up but getting verniers and other measuring sticks "in" is difficult. In the end I suspect some "trial fitting" (ie hit and miss) will be required. And you should see the shape of the bracket for the crankshaft sensor........Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Michael! I have an old set of HIF's that are tagged AUD 493. Here are some measurements, + or - a few thou!

Overall length (longitudinal axis) of mounting
flange = 3.686 inches.

Mounting holes ID = 0.357 inches

ID of the center large hole = 1.495 inches

End of flange to nearest edge of large hole (along
longitudinal axis) = 1.094 inches

Center to center on mounting holes = 3.0 inches

Nearest edge of mounting hole to end of flange (along longitudinal axis) = 0.167 inches.

Center of mounting hole to nearest edge of large
hole (along longitudinal axis) = 0.75 inches

Hope this helps. Let me know if I need to clarify!

Cool!
But, it would seem that a single carb application would use an HIF6/44, not an HIF4/38. As far as I know, there are only two flanges found on MGB apps, the 2 bolt diagonal of the H*4, or the 4 bolt H*6. The two bolt flange being the same as the 4 bolt, except only half the bolt holes and the center bore size; ie, the bolts are spaced the same. In any event, you need the outside configuration, not the flange dimensions.

The HIF44, used with the supercharger application, is a direct replacement for the later US cars that were fitted with the Zenith/Stromberg carb. I'm sure that they have the same mounting base measurements. RAY

Tom, Many thanks for the info.

Time to produce the first template in thin (bendable) metal!

FRM- I was hoping that the "exterior" was the same! I think I now have enough to go on. Thanks for your help Michael
Michael Beswick

RAY, Thanks for that. I have now got enough info to start fabrication! Thanks to all for your help. Michael
