MG MGB Technical - HOOD (bonnet) REPLACEMENT

The Hood (bonnet) on my 79 B has been damaged. I would like to find a used replacement. What model years would be a direct replacement for my U.S. 4/1979 production (rubber bumper) vehicle?

As far as I know all MGB bonnet lids (roadster and GT) are the same shape from the earliest chrome to the latest rubber bumper cars. The only differences are that in 1969 the material changed from aluminium to steel, and that there are differences in where the bonnet prop is mounted. Other than that I think any MGB bonnet will fit your car.

Even the MGC bonnet would fit, but of course it has the raised section at the front to accommodate the length of the six cylinder engine. My own MGB wears an RV8 bonnet which fits perfectly. I needed it because of the bulge which fits over the V8 fuel injection.

They all fit - even though the curve of the bonnet was changed slightly for all cars after the introduction of the V8

Good to know. I need one with the curve due to the addition of the Weber 7MM heat insulation plate which has raised the height of the carburetor.

Ideally, the MGC or the V8 would be the best choice.

So the mounting brackets would not be an issue regardless of which replacement I found ??

No problem with fitting, same mounting brackets and hinges, and bonnet catch. As I said the prop mountings could be different, but you can easily get over that.

My understanding is that the prop changes sides on North American cars with the boosted dual circuit braking system. As long as you are prepared to deal with that then earlier will fit. 71/72 cars with the recessed grille had the front edge pierced for bright trim, again get-overable.
