MG MGB Technical - How to replace a blown welch plug!
It is hard to get a good swing with the hammer unless you take this stance!

i think that's admirable. if i were you i would clean the outside well and put a coating of JBweld or similar (one of the metal putties?) along the seam. belt n braces. especially since as you write - difficult to get a good swing.... G and if you were in the UK..... you wouldn't be wearing shorts! |

Get an expandable welch (freeze) plug. Simply insert and tighten. No hammering needed. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-02601?seid=srese1&cm_mmc=pla-google-_-shopping-_-srese1-_-dorman&gclid=CKTM06jcw9MCFQa2wAodk2IDug ![]() |

Interestingly we tried a Dorman adjustable plug but had trouble getting it to expand so opted for a new brass plug http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/cooling/cool_105a.htm (That's not me in that confined space but the more youthful owner - location Mallala raceway for Nat Meeting super sprint competition - insertion was successful and owner completed the last run) Mike |

Yes Willie, all went well considering I limited rpm to 5,500 (300kms on engine only). Car ran and sounded great. Mike |

Good one - congrats on your pre event efforts |

If the last guy used JB weld then you will need JB weld. Otherwise a not very good idea. The expandable sort are ok maybe for an emergency, but they will not stay in there for very long before they go to pieces. |
