MG MGB Technical - Hydraulic parts
Why do replacement hydraulic fittings always take a different sized spanner to the one that comes off? I've had this now on brake hoses, gauge hose, and now cooler hoses. Annoying. |

Paul - One adjustable Crescent spanner will fit all, albeit sloppy :-) Cheers - Dave |

Paul, I'm having a similar problem as I'm renewing all my brake pipes on my 1976 Roadster. A 7/16 AF spanner to undo the original fittings turns into a 11MM metric for the new fittings. I can only think that all new hydraulic fittings are metric? |

The threads may be the correct UNF, but the parts are probably made from metric sized bar stock. |

7/16" equates to 11.11mm. So an 11mm A/F spanner technically won't fit a 7/16" A/F nut. Conversely a 7/16 spanner should fit an 11mm A/F nut. . Most of the time an 11mm will fit 7/16" because for a spanner to fit a nut there has to be a degree of clearance. That working clearance varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Then there are manufacturing tolerances to factor in. So spanners vary as does standard hexagonal stock. If a 7/16" spanner won't fit a particular 11mm nut the nut is probably oversize, in other words inaccurate! If you do use an adjustable make sure it's an imperial one!! |

I have three adjustables, but they're all metric, I believe! |

The adjustable wrenches in the states were called "many-sixteenths". You probably did more damage than good using those on small parts. It was OK for house plumbing, but not in a car Cheers Gary79mgb |

Neither my Imperial or metric spanners fit some of the new hoses what I would call properly. The annoying bit is buying flare spanners for existing brake and clutch hoses and finding they don't fit the new. |

I find a Mole grip seems to fit everything! |

But not well ... |

Have you tried the METRIC-INCH spanners and sockets? Very clever design on the gripping/contact surfaces so 1 spanner fits well on say 1/2 inch AF and 13mm. The normally flat bearing surfaces on the jaws are shaped therefore the contact or pressure point is the middle section of the flat face on the nut/bolt. Sizes in my kit range from 3/8&10mm to 3/4&19mm for the Open/ring set and 5mm to 3/4&19mm for the sockets. I acquired a set 15 years ago and they live in the B's boot/trunk. Cannot recall any damage caused by "slipping" of the tool on the work piece. Cheers Ray |

Metrinch, in case others look http://www.metrinch-tools.com/website/produkten.php. Neat, like 'flat drive' sockets. |
