MG MGB Technical - indecators not working but hazards work

i have a MGb GT its a 1979 model.

the hazards work fine but the indecators dont work and i was just wondering how to get them working again as i need to get them working asap

Bradley. Start the engine, turn on one turn signal, and check for power to the flasher unit under the dash. If you have power, bad flasher. If you do not have power, bad line from the hazard switch. Check for power between those two points. Bad flashers are becoming more common. My most recent purchase of a Lucas brand flasher came apart as I was attempting to wire it up.

Do the wipers, heater motor, or anything else on the green circuit work?

General Rule No. 1 --- Disconnect the battery and wire-brush the fuse holders.

Brad, Do the indicator lights come on and not flash? If so check all bulbs to be sure they are the same type, either brass based or silver based. If both types are installed change to all silver based. Brass based and siver based bulbs have different resisatnces and will cause the lights to flash slow or not at all. If they don't work at all check for power as Les says. If there is no power to the flasher unit the most likely cause is a faulty hazard switch, This can be checked by removing the switch and checking the two green wires for power. One green wire will have power at all times and one will have power only with the hazard switch in the off position, this is the wire that powers the t/s flasher unit.

Good Luck

If you have a spare hazard Switch try it.
This would be a quick and easy test.

All my indicator problems have come from a faulty hazard switches.

On a 79 the hazard and indicator flashers should be side-by-side on the firewall in front of the driver. The hazard has brown and light-green/brown wires, the indicator green and light-green/brown.

If you have power on the green *but not* the light-green/brown with the indicator switch off, then the indicator flasher unit is indeed faulty.

If you have power on both the green and light-green/brown terminals, operate the indicators and check again. If still power on both there is a break in the circuit between the flasher unit and the indicator switch (assuming both sides don't even light and the problem has suddenly started). If power on neither then the hazard switch is probably the cause, flipping it on and off a few times may help, but in these cases you usually end up having to dismantle the switch (in a poly bag to catch the bits), dig out the old grease, and put in some fresh. If flipping the switch does nothing it could be a bad connection in one of the several bullet connectors leading back to the fusebox. If you still have power on the green but it is now missing from the light-green/brown, then again the flasher unit is faulty.
