MG MGB Technical - Installed a Webasto!
After a bare-metal body job on the (Glacier White)'73 BGT, I thought I'd report that I have successfully installed a new Webasto sunroof, with the invaluable help of Peter Harvey, the guru of Webasto installation. Peter of course lives in England and has spent 40 years installing this beautiful period piece into all manner of British cars. The Webasto kit was purchased from RS Coachbuilt; they were less than helpful when it came to follow-up information - I felt pretty lonely, until I was able to visit Peter Harvey in Kent and talk through the process, plus take photos in his workshop. From there, we followed the installation instructions supplied with the kit, but sent a stream of clarifying questions to Peter. I used a local motor trimmer to tackle the upholstery parts of the job - i.e. prepping the top cover and fabricating the new headlining. In the end, the job was complex but definitely do-able provided we didn't mind asking questions, and checking each step before we moved on. The result is a period improvement which looks great whether open or closed, and which satisfies a mental picture that I've had in my head since the '70s! I'm happy to add detail if anyone is out there tackling the same job; and I have numerous photos of the installation process. Of course RS Coachbuilts have a website with a download of their installation manual, but it takes a fair bit of mental gymnastics to put into practice. Hope this is of interest. Kind regards, John Hall. |

Glad you are happy with it. I have one on my 1975 gt and it is great on sunny days, something you will have more of than me! How about a photo. Rod |

Rod, I'll definitely post a couple of photos when the car is back home in a week or so - I have no idea how to do it, but will have a son visiting and who will show me! |

Andy and Jud : funny, I thought I'd sent an acknowledgement yesterday, but it seems to have disappeared into the ether. You make it all sound so simple that I'm tempted to give it a try. I have a couple of photos on my i-pad which might be of interest. Watch this space. Regards, John. |
