MG MGB Technical - intermittent clutch grind
i have a intermittent clutch grind ,it started very soon after the new clutch was fitted .when i push the clutch down for more that a few seconds it feels live its catching something .i had a look underneath and found a small amount of oil from the rubber gaitor where the clutch arm goes in to the gear box . |

Leaking slave cylinder seal? |

Grinding and oil are almost certainly unconnected. I could feel grinding through my clutch pedal if I pushed it all the way down, so I just didn't push it all the way down. After some time the release bearing broke, for some reason it had been rubbing on the cover-plate and worn one side right through. Bit of a concern with a new clutch. Did you replace the release bearing at the same time? Did you refit the springs that hold the release bearing 'ears' into the clutch release arm? Did you double-check you got the friction plate the right way round? Oil could be from a leaking first-motion shaft oil-seal. It's always a bit of a quandry with these, if this or the crankshaft oil-seal (leaks from the split-pin hole at the front of the bell-housing) are leaking when you go to change the clutch then fair enough you replace them, but what about if they aren't leaking? Do you leave them and hope the disturbance doesn't start them leaking? Replace them anyway and hope they aren't poor quality and leak when the old ones wouldn't have? And how about the pilot bearing? And so it goes on. The gearbox seal just makes a mess, but the crank seal will contaminate the clutch. |

ive not done many miles with the new clutch ,it was from mg hive , i think maybe it was the mechanics fault leaving the problems and just fitting the clutch . |

Having replaced hundreds of clutches, a few times I had one that made a grinding noise occasionally when starting to engage. This was usually caused because he release bearing was not central over the 1st motion shaft. This can be caused by the fork pivot bush or bolt being worn or the fork just out of line. Years ago I had an Austin A50 with MGB motor etc (Riley 4/72 brakes & other mods)that made this noise off & on for about 70,000 miles and gave no other trouble. My son enventually rolled it. Garth. |

same problem on my 77B...brand new clutch about 4000 miles ago...suddenly starts graunching every once in a while. Stopped it by throughly re-greasing the slave/clutch fork pivot pin. Weird! |
