MG MGB Technical - Later type sender unit. Fitting tips?

Having cleaned my petrol tank I need to fit a new sender /fuel pick up unit. The late fixing method with a rotating ring pressing on a flexible washer does not look very positive to me and the original leaked very slightly.

Should the washer have a smear of oil on it as one would use on an oil filter or should it be assembled dry?

Should I perhaps use some form of Hylomar to get a really good seal?

I always fit them dry and haven't had an issue in over 100 cars.
Just make sure the rubber doesn't get pinched by the locating tangs on the sender!
Also, don't go too crazy tightening the locking ring. It shouldn't need to be all the way round, just 4/5 or so will be fine.

Thanks Roadwarrior, you clearly speak from experience.

Is there a special tool for tightening the locking ring or is it just a case of tightening by hand as far as possible and finishing off with a drift and a few taps with a hammer'?

I fitted one recently, and had a leak, but it was from the flexible pipe from the pump, so it may be worth changing that as well.
Of course I thought it was the sender unit seal leaking so I refitted it using Blue Hylomar, have had no problems since.

Being somewhat paranoid over braided pipes I replaced the flexi from pump to fuel line with a standalone banjo, Codan ethanol resistant fuel pipe and clips FWIW

Thanks for the advice. I have changed the the flexi and the pump - both were original fittings,but they were in a bad way thanks to unleaded/ethanol petrol I believe.

There was a tool, but now its just drift it on without bending the tabs!

I did the job yesterday evening and then refitted the tank. It all appeared to work.

I turned the ring by hand with a cloth over the tabs (to ease the pain) and then gently drifted the tabs till it all seemed secure without overdoing it. The tabs do not seem to be damaged.

Does anyone know what the proper tool for this job looked like?

I confess, I applied a little Blue Hylomar, reasoning that at worst if it did not do any good it would do no harm. Probably unnecessary.

Sam, from the MGB Workshop Manual it looks like service tool 18G1001 was used. see attached picture

I just tap each tang bit by bit in turn for both tightening and loosening.

Just realized you were talking about a later sender. The following is for the previous ones::

I've taken these off/on many times and even wrote a white paper about calibrating the senders.

Always do it dry with clean surfaces. Never had a leak.
