Do you have a heritage certificate for it? It will have the key numbers on it. |

Try http://britishcarkeys.com/ Peter maybe able to send you a ring of keys if you don't have the lock number. http://www.mgexperience.net/phorum/read.php?1,158350,158403#msg-158403 |

"Do you have a heritage certificate for it? It will have the key numbers on it. " If it has them at all it will have the *original* key numbers. Some or all of the locks may already have been changed. Because it is a roadster you will at least be able to get in and remove and dismantle the door etc. locks and find out what number they are. The embarresment is not in losing them, but in not having a spare set and more importantly making sure they work ;o) |

I have only one key for my B. I bought a set of blanks for a B and took then to the hardware store to have them cut. The fellow said he would "try" to duplicate it. Needless to say the keys cut did not fit, so I didn't force it. Took my key and the new "keys" to our locksmith here at the uni for him to take a look at it. He said that the original was quite worn. He took it down a little and seemed to fit a little better, but stop as soon as I felt some resistance. He said he would try to take it down a little further The reason why I haven't pursued this any further is that a couple of months after I bought my B, the key got stuck in the ignition and wouldn't turn it over. Had to get my towed to the garage! |

Gerry, I highly recommend Keys4Classics (www.keys4classics.com). Stuart, the owner, is very knowledgeable, skilled, and customer-oriented. He uses high quality, contemporary, but period correct, blanks and can cut keys to code. Their website contains information on where to locate your key code, and if you can't track it down yourself, if you send him a photo he often can identify the code for a small fee. I ordered sets cut to code for my 62' MGA roadster and my son's '68 MGB-GT and received them in NJ in just over a week. (Did I mention Stuart's in Australia?) They're superb and work great. So are his prices, which I found couldn't be matched by any local shop. He takes PayPal, VISA, and a couple of other cards, and also has a store on Ebay. Here are some of the blanks he stocks for the B: http://www.keys4classics.com/html/MG_70-77.html He can also get ILCO blanks. On the MGA the code is stamped into the face of the ignition switch, and so is easily read while just sitting in the car. As I recall, in the case of the '68 MGB the code was stamped into the lock barrel, and only required removing the steering column cover to read it. I think later B's hid the code deeper or did away with it entirely. Stuart probably can advise you regarding your '72 B - just send him an email at email@keys4classics.com . Steve |
