MG MGB Technical - Machining shop... B'ham?

Hey all

I'm restoring my tired BGT and have started to dismantle the old donk... I'll be looking for a decent machine shop around B'ham (UK) in the next few weeks to start work... initially on the head but later the block/cylinder/crank etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance,
Rick.
R Sims

It depends what you're having done.

There is Cranmore Engineering in Small Heath, but I haven't used them.

I've had good results from Coventry Boring.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the reply.

I'll be wanting the head stripped (although I'll probably do that myself), cleaned and inspected before new valves/stems (if required) are machined into the head with new pieces as necessary.

Next the block... I want it completely cleaned and inspected for damage. Check the cylinder and determine whether a rebore is required. Look at the crank and grind to the next undersize if necessary. Next look at the flywheel, lighten, and balance the hole lot.

I'd prefer to take everything to the same place, but if it is better to get various bits done at various places to get the best job, so be it.

Cheers,
Rick.

I've also found another place, albeit not in B'ham, but still relatively local... Dave Rushton in Stoke... anyone heard of them?

Out of interest, assuming the head to be sound, how much are we looking at for inspection, installing unleaded valves (recut/resurfaced as necessary for all valves) and re-surfacing the head?

Cheers,
R.

Original valves are perfectly suitable for unleaded use. To machine and fit new hard exhaust inserts, cut three angles and machine head comes in at about £100.

You're close enough to Peter Burgess that I'd make him the first port of call. He wrote the book on heads etc and his place is in Alfreton.
