MG MGB Technical - MGB battery

My twin 6v batteries have lost there charge, I found a battery 12v which is the size as one of the 6v batteries 42ah it starts the car fine has 4 year gaurantee and cost £47 Its a BOSCH S4000, you can still use the original threaded clamp bolts all you need is a bit of angle iron approx 25mm x25mm x 210mm long with two holes for the clamp bolts file a flat on the angle so the washer fits square to it I used a bit of packing on the angle with a lengh of old bike inner tube for protection.

Well done. A modern car battery is much better made than the old fashioned 6 volt ones, where the design hasn't changed for aeons. I have a single battery in my V8 and it swings over that large engine with no hesitation.

The same thing happened on my MGB but I went a slightly different route. I fitted 2 063 12 volt batteries and wired them up in paralell to keep the car at 12 volts and not 24. I have done this mod before when I have fitted heated front screens to GTs but did on my car because I can buy 4 year warranty batteries for for £27 each and this is much more cost effective than the useless 6 v items being sold now.

I would be concerned about some situations where high currents could flow with bstteries in parallel. Its possible for a battery to get an internal short, I once had a car written off after it failed for this reason and the RAC were a bit slow getting out with the new one. With 2 in parallel the good one would drive a very high current into the failed one, you would still get no electrics and risk a fire or a boiled sulphuric acid shower. The single battery mod makes good sense and I'm a terrible stick in the mud for not doing it on my car.

£27 is a good price for a battery especially with a 4 year warranty, is that from a retail supplier as I'm looking to replace mine.

Only on my second set of twin 6v batteries in 20 years, I've had more trouble with the single 12v in the V8, which was down to the drain of the alarm system when I stopped using it every day. There are at least three different designs of 6v I am aware of, and whilst the original tar-top may still be constructed in exactly the same way as originally, a) there is no reason why the more modern concealed-link type aren't constructed using the same technology as modern batteries, and b) there was never any problem with the original type anyway. If you have problems now it is more likely to be due to drains or bad connections elsewhere. But then never mind stick-in-the-mud, I'm a dinosaur. Parallel batteries are simply double the cost and trouble they need be, as well as one always discharging into the other, and again if you need them (with standard engines) there is something wrong elsewhere.
