MG MGB Technical - MGB boot emblem

Hi everyone,
Is the MGB octagon emblem which mounts under the M-G-B script emblem on the boot lid fixed with adhesive or with pins drilled through the lid?
G Nicholas

The one with pins means drilling. The plastic piece is adhesive.

Pins, originally with spire clips on the back, now it's more usual to use plastic sockets, similar to the heater air intake.

Paul, that would depend on your heater intake - mine has spire clips.

Drilled with "top hat" friction bushes. They are better than spire clips as they keep water out. Or as you suggested just use automotive adhesive pads.

Allan - do you have a pic of these? I tried to google them without luick

Max, Have a look at this;

There was only one grille for all years. As long as the holes in the panels are big enough to take the correctly-sized sockets when the pins are in it will be fine. I used sockets on my roadster 27 years ago, and the V8 will get them when it is reassembled. Both came to me with clips. Of course, it is much easier for scrotes to remove the grille or badges with sockets, but I haven't had a problem with that.

When refitting my boot badges I cut a thread on the mounting pins and used small nuts and spring washers to hold them on. This means that they can be easily removed for cleaning underneath and one does not need to use leavers to take them off and risk damaging the paint.

Cutting the thread takes a little patience but achievable.

The other trouble with spire clips is that they are more or less a once and for all fixing. Good for anti-scrote duties, but a bugger to remove the grill or badge should you want to. A slight down-side, besides the ease of removal, of friction bushes is that they create a stand-off from the body work. Threading the pins would be good for the boot badge, and would allow the use of a rubber washer or sealant, and would be anti-scrote.

I have the older style emblems with the chrome octagon and separate M and G with the paint colour showing through. I like the look of these, but the plastic bushes are noticeable and hold the components slightly off the surface. It annoys me whenever I wash the car (which isn't often).

Thanks Allan!

I find the plastic sockets convenient for the 'MGB' badge on the boot lid as I can remove it for polishing, which avoids getting white powder stuck in the crevices.
