MG MGB Technical - MGB Front Wings RB and CB

Hi,

I have a 1977 RB MGB GT and the front wing have seen better days, I am also going to debumper the car so my question is do the Chrome bumper wings fit a rubber bumpered car?

Thanks

Yes they do but of course the sidelight arrangement is different. But if you are going to debumper the car, then chrome wings is what you need. Make sure you buy GT wings. Roadster wings are different up at the windscreen end.

When you say de-bumper the car, do you mean leaving the bumpers off completely 'ala racing style?' It does look handsome, and cleans up the lines of the GT. I have done this on mine here in Oz, I only take it out occasionally as I don't think the 'boys in blue' would necessarily condone it! Mike

In NZ it's quite legal to remove bumpers.

The RB wings are different at the front where the side lights go. I modified mine by welding in bits cut out of rusty CB ones.

As mentioned the rear of roadster and CB wings are totally different.

If you are debumpering a RB car you also need to cut off the front part of the bumper mounts where the rubber bumpers bolt on if you want a very clean look. Some not very clear pics here: http://www.asciimation.co.nz/pics/index.html

Also you need to work out what type of grille you want to fit.

Thank you , I was not aware that the GT and Roadster wigns are diferent!

My plan is to remove the bumpers as not olny are they ugly (In my opinion) but they weight 20KG's each.

The grill I am going to fit is a honey comb grill.

In the UK I do not beleave that there is a liegal requirement to have bumpers fitted.

One additional Question, Are the doors on a roadster the same as a GT? I know the quarter light section is different but is the basic door the same?

Thanks

Door, yes I think they are generally the same (apart from the quarterlight frames as you say) but someone else better confirm that!

I think the only door difference is between the original early pull handles and the later push button kind as well as the later American door which have massive crash beams in them and an anti-burst button that fits a special slot thing on the B pillar.

Jules, you are right in that you don't have to have bumpers in the UK. But you must not leave any sharp edges or brackets sticking out. Everything must be smooth.

Roadster and GT doors have different part numbers, but I can't recall what the differences are.

I am converting a rubber bumper car to chrome bumper specs and here is the first of two images, showing the standard rubber bumper chassis rails.

The first image shows the original rubber bumper platform with the unsightly chassis rails, and the second image in the following post, shows the new chrome bumper platform in place.

Here is the second image of the conversion

The door drop glass is different too.
