MG MGB Technical - MGB GT window regulator

Hi everybody,

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I can't find a definitive answer anywhere: can I use a window winder mechanism from an MGB on my MGBGT? Are they interchangeable?

I know that I need an early one, just need to know whether there were differences between B and GT. I can't think that there would be, but experience tells me to ask and be sure...

Many thanks!

I would hazard a guess that they aren't, due to the GT window being taller and having to travel further.

I would need to check parts books to be sure, but I'm at work at the mo.

Have you tried Chris to see if he has any?

Hi Piers,

I've had a look at the MGOC Spares catalogue and the widow winder mechanisms are the same for the Roadster and GT. For your year (1966) the part No's are

HZA 2118 Regulator RH
HZA 2119 Regulator LH

GHN3, GHD3 (3 Synchromesh Cars) Push Button Type Door (1965-1967)

You can get a free Parts Catalogue CD from this page :

I've wound up a few widows in my time ...

Thank you, all of you. My instinct was that they ought to be different (owing to height of windscreen etc.) but then I could not find any record of a different part number so then wondered whether those in the GT simply have to work slightly harder for a living, hence my question... it seems from those helpful posts that it is the latter option, surprising but refreshingly simple. Thank you all!

Dave: why do I always forget that I have Chris' number in my contacts, particularly when (prompted by you, thank you) I have got parts from him in the past, and it is such a nice drive down from here? Thank you for the renewed prompt - I'll add a post-it to the cover of my history file.

Andy: that is a very useful link, thank you very much.

Brian: no comment!!

According to the Parts Catalogue the regulator changed with chassis number, but not with model.
Paul Hunt

Only difference is the switch from the post winder knob on the MK I and the square flat plate design for the MKII. Not sure if this was just a US change.
